Survivor, will your team win the race for survival of the fittest. An outdoor, active and educational team building event.Think Ray Mears. A complete back to basics event where teams are transferred to a remote location where they must orienteer/navigate their way to the base camp. Here they will be met by professional instructors and outward bound experts for a tailored survival experience. Once the group have assembled in their meeting room they are interrupted by our survival expert and his team who will brief them on the programme ahead. Teams of up to 10/11 are formed and immediately they are set off with only the basic equipment of a map, compass and 2 way radios. Once the teams arrive at their base camp our team of experts will teach them all the necessary survival techniques required, the teams will learn how to purify water, start a fire, make a shelter, provide food and work as a team to survive. Teams will then be given their challenge packs including a map, compass and watch, they will have to navigate between each “check point”, complete the tasks and navigate to the next check point. There will be strict time penalties for arriving late at a check point. Each team will also be awarded points on the completion of each task. On FootYou can run or walk the key is to select suitable footwear and travel at whatever pace is best for your team. During this event you will be swapping between terrain and the key is to set a consistent pace that will see you through to the end of the race, as a team. NavigationThis is the backbone of The Survivor, the ability to move as a team with map in hand. We use a number of differing styles of mapping and this can prove interesting for even the most seasoned of orienteerers, how many times have you navigated from an aerial photograph, in a rural area. Within the context of the programme the teams would take on a range of disciplines, as outlined below. Survival ChallengesAt various checkpoints the teams will be met by the trained survival instructors and will be required to undertake a range of survival challenges based around the five basic survival skills (Fire, Shelter, Signalling, Food/Water and First Aid) such as creating fire to boil a pint of water (this will be timed), shelter building and tracking. LostThe team are suddenly split up to two groups and find themselves in different locations. Fortunately, each group has a VHF radio however only one group will have the map for this exercise. Clear communication, good observation skills and spatial awareness will help the team be re united. AquaductCamping as far away from the waters edge as possible will enable you to get away from the biting insects that live on the water margins and give you a chance for a good nights sleep. In order to minimise the amount of energy expenditure carrying water from the water source back to camp and evading bites your team needs to create the longest aqueduct you can using the equipment provided. Hunting PacksOur ancestors used many skills to survive. They used their tracking skills to find and hunt animals used for food, clothing, and tools. Teams will be taught the skills required to hunt and will all have a go at axe throwing and archery. Fire LightingThe ability to light a fire means that your group can have warmth, the ability to cook and a comforting light when stuck out in the wilderness. Failure to light fires can lead to lack of ability to boil water for drinking, limited options for preparing food and in bad weather conditions, hyperthermia. Canister RetrievalAn intriguing skill challenge where the objective is to retrieve the canister from the inaccessible area using the provided equipment – only rope! Simulating natural obstacles found in the wild, the team will be excluded from the immediate area around the food canister with nothing and no one allowed to touch the ground inside the area. If the canister is knocked off the stand then the food source will be spoiled and inedible. Whole Group Finale: Tent ErectingShelter is the key to the survival of a group when the weather is bad and great for a good night sleep even in the best of conditions. Thought and consideration go into a well made shelter to ensure that it is fit for purpose, structurally sound, well orientated and weather proof. To assist with this challenge we have provided tents but the criteria for putting them up remains the same and there will be certain parameters to be operated within! The fastest team will be told that they will win the extra luxuries needed for a sound night sleep!
